Making Solar Dye Jars with Natural Dyes with Liz Bonny

We will make solar dye jars using prepared yarns and natural, locally sourced dyes. Everyone can make up to three jars to take home. This class will be held in conjunction with a seed exchange.

All materials will be provided for the class.

Liz Bonny is a weaver, dyer, and spinner located in Lawrence, KS. She owns and runs Harvestry by Hand, a fiber business aiming to connect and educate people interested in fiber. She loves to experiment with and teach process, using a mix of local and thrifted materials and supplies. Liz hosts a Fiber Meet Up, and is President of her local Kaw Valley Fiber Guild and the Kaw Point Fibershed.

In this class, we will learn to wet felt around a template to make an oven mitt. (This class was reschedule to March 1 from January 4th due to the weather. There are still open seats available.)

Kay McCoy developed a passion for fiber arts first when she learned to macramé, knit, and wheat weave as a 4-Her. That passion continued when she learned to spin, and weave, and rekindled her interest in knitting. Kay loves finding new ways to feed her fiber enthusiasm including teaching, creating needle felted art, designing knitwear patterns, and making and selling items she creates through “Prairie Inspirations”, her Fiber Arts business.

Serendipitous Dyeing with Kay McCoy

Learn three quick three easy methods to dye yarn or roving (animal fibers, silk, or nylon) using Gaywool Dyes. In this class we will learn to dye a center pull ball, dip-dye, and create unique hand-painted skeins or rovings. We will discuss color theory and ideas for other methods of dyeing as well. At the end of class, we may have time to do some “casserole dyeing” with leftovers.

The cost of the dye is included in the class fee. Students need to provide their own roving or yarn (must be animal fiber, silk or nylon). Roving and yarn will be available for purchase as well.

In this class, you will learn the basics of crochet - chain, slip stitch, single crochet, double crochet. Students need to bring an H hook.

You'll experience the freedom to choose the weft colors, learn to handle the loom, what to do with ends, how to maintain an even beat, and more. Textural Weaving

Truly not meant to be a traditional tapestry class, students will make an approximately 8x10” wall hanging while discovering techniques that focus on creating texture. Bulky Yarns and roving will make the project a bit faster than traditional tapestry. Bring your grace to allow yourself the freedom to experiment. All supplies and equipment are provided for use during class. Looms are available for purchase (at a discount) after class.
